Welcome to another edition of the WellnessMINUTE. I’m Gary Cassidy. Today, we begin discussing the key elements of your health & wellness strategy that can impact your participants’ engagement. Strategy focuses on your tone, understanding your population, your timing and outcomes.

Timing, as they say, is everything. When you launch your wellness program it’s important to pace yourself. Remember wellness is a marathon… not a sprint. It’s not a program, but a shift in your organization’s’ culture.

Asking for too much too fast without sufficient education and communication and your employees may hit a wall of resistance.

Just like starting a workout program based on a New Year’s resolution. People jump in too quickly with maximum effort, and then wake up the next morning and are hit with the reality of soreness, injuries, fatigue. Basically everything that says, “This is not for me why bother?” The same can be said for health & wellness programs that rush to do too much too soon.

Remember, you’re invested in not having your employees’ fail; as a matter of fact you should be committed to seeing them succeed in your wellness program. Because if they are successful and become educated and engaged about their personal health and benefits, you can realize a measurable change in your healthcare costs, usage and overall company profitability.
