New Jersey Anti-Discrimination Poster Updated
The New Jersey Office of Civil Rights has amended its required anti-discrimination poster to include the newest protected category: Individuals who express or identify with the opposite sex. This revision to the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (N.J.S.A. 10:5-1 et seq.) results from the Governor Corzine's signing into law of Act S362 which extends protection to those "having or being perceived as having a gender related identity or expression whether or not stereotypically associated with a person’s assigned sex at birth, including transgender status." This may be manifested in the person’s clothing, hairstyle, name, mannerisms and/or the pronouns that he or she uses to identify himself or herself. New Jersey employers must be careful to avoid workplace and hiring practices that may impinge on the rights of these protected individuals.
WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU AS AN EMPLOYER
All New Jersey employers (including unions and employment agencies) are required to display the revised poster by the effective date of the new regulation, June 17, 2007. Copies of the poster are available in Adobe format and may be downloaded and printed onto legal paper. To download a PDF of the Division on Civil Rights' Poster, click here.
